Winter is a time that brings people together. School is out, families celebrate the holidays and the guys over at the Grape and Grain Exchange are bringing people together with their crazy winter cocktails. In the spirit of the season, they roll out a new menu featuring a variety of unique, winter-themed cocktails.
“We really just try to take all of the flavors associated with winter and try to see if we can put something together that tastes good,” said Grape and Grain managing partner Anthony Norton.
First up on the menu was the “Beet Down,” a personal favorite of Norton. It is made from Bols Barrel aged Genever, Luxardo, roasted beet shrub and fresh lime juice. It also has an interesting twist, adding crushed pepper on top. It has a rather unique taste that you can’t quite put your finger on, so you might have to order two, just in case.
Next on the menu was the “Middle of D’Mall.” If you are a fan of desert drinks, this one is for you. It is made with Mathuselem 18 year rum, Siesta Key spiced rum, egg whites, Fruit Lab Ginger Liquor, Cinnamon Simple Syrup and Butternut Puree. It tastes like a pumpkin pie, but the egg whites give it a frothy texture.
Last, but certainly not least, was the “Johnny Appleseed.” This was definitely the sweetest tasting of the bunch, made with Four Roses Bourbon, BarKeep Apple Bitters, fresh orange juice, house made apple cider and a rosemary sprig. This one has some bite to it, but the apple flavors with the smell of the rosemary sprig will bring back memories of Christmas parties past.
