It's a Toxic World | First Coast Magazine

Let’s face it—we are living in a toxic world. Every day, we are exposed to a large and growing number of environmental toxins. Did you know that there are almost 85,000 chemicals currently registered with the EPA? And that’s it—just registered. Less than 3,000 of those have ever been tested for safety, because they’re not required to be. And to make matters worse, the average American woman leaves her home in the morning after exposing herself to more than 120 toxins- in her hair products, soaps, lotions, and makeups. We put them on our skin, inhale them, and even use them in our mouth. You would probably be surprised at your total “Toxic Body Burden,” which is a measurement used by scientists and Functional Medicine providers to determine the total toxic load you are carrying inside you.

So what do we do about it? Live in a glass bubble and never come out? Not possible, but we can do everything possible to live a healthy lifestyle so that our bodies can detoxify from all those chemicals. A few main points for consideration;

  1. Minimize your exposure. Read the ingredients label on your personal care products. If you can’t pronounce it, you probably don’t want to be applying it to your skin, breathing it, or putting it in your mouth.
  2. Eat a healthy diet. Minimize processed foods, and eat organic whenever possible.
  3. Reduce stress. Stress reduces your body’s ability to detoxify; a buildup of toxic chemicals can actually contribute to inflammation and many disease processes.

If you are concerned about your level of exposure, find a provider who will work with you to determine your level of exposure, total toxic body burden, and then help you with treatment to remove toxins from your body.
